Jerod Mayo stands behind Brissett and offers an update on Bourne's injury

Highlights from Mayo's appearance on “The Greg Hill Show” on WEEI Monday morning…

▪ Jacoby Brissett is still the starter at quarterback. But Mayo added a caveat: “You know, when I say things like, OK, this guy's starting…we always, always reserve the right to do otherwise, no matter what our position is.” Could he be teasing that change could come sooner rather than later?

▪ Mayo was asked about the “spark” – possibly as Drake Maye. He spoke directly to fans: “I understand the fans’ frustration,” he said of the No. 3 overall pick. “I understand the frustration of you here. What we do is what we think is best. What I'm doing is what I believe is best for the Patriots today and in the future. And that’s how I have to look at these things.”

Mayo also said that there is no specific reason why Maye isn't playing Brissett, and that the decision to play Maye rests solely with Mayo – not de facto GM Eliot Wolf.

“It’s me,” he said. “It's 100 percent and so you can talk crap about me, I'll do what I think is best in the future.”

Mayo also said the Krafts would leave football decisions up to him and Wolf.

▪ Mayo offered a compliment early on: “Special teams goes out and plays well, and the rest of us did really well.” Patriots kicker Joey Slye rushed for a franchise-record 63 yards on Sunday.

▪ Mayo called out his team on air: “You've heard me say this over and over again, and I use this platform and every other media platform to communicate with the players.” I know they read this stuff. Look guys, we need to get the lead offensively. We have to protect the quarterback.”

▪ Mayo said the defense “just didn't meet our goals” and praised San Francisco: “They're a good team … they're struggling with injuries, but they have good depth and good players. All sides were on the ball, and we just didn't go out and do it offensively, we still turned the ball over. We slowly started to come out of the gates. Defensively, you know, we still leave the quarterback out. We’re still letting some of those runs out there.”

▪ No updates on injuries to David Andrews, Kyle Dugger or Caedan Wallace. “Not yet, not yet.” Mayo said the team landed back in Boston around 4 a.m. and players would be in the building later for testing.

▪ Kendrick Bourne, who has been out since last season with a torn ACL, is “close to being ready to go,” according to Mayo. Bourne is eligible to return to practice this week after spending the first four weeks on injured reserve. Bourne was there on the trip to San Francisco, a rarity for players on IR.

“I thought it would be good to take him on the trip, just to get back into the routine,” Mayo said.

▪ Rhamondre Stevenson fumbled for the fourth time in as many games. Mayo took this as an opportunity to address the running game as a whole: “We have to be able to run the ball and we have to be able to stop throwing and play good special teams…We can't- we can't – Go out there and expect to win games when we turn the ball over. I can’t win until you stop.”
